The Library Shelves

I thought it would be fun to update you on how we're doing with our library book shelf. It.is.awesome. Before this bookcase was in my life all the books you see here were sprawled all along this wall and no...we really didn't have that much better of a place!

During the school year I keep some relevant study items on the top of this shelf. It's perfect! I was also keeping books open for exploration. Right now the stuff of summer is there...R11's seasonal crafts, a bird watching book, a set of binoculars, a whole jug of beads just given to us and a Presidents trivia game.

This is a library book's home away from home. I'm still in love with my $40 shelf from the consignment store. I waited patiently and it paid off!

So, where do you keep library books while they visit your house?

We have an open cubby/shelf in our entertainment center for library books. I keep a couple of canvas bags beside them, and books are put inside it the bag after we read them. On library day all I have to do is grab the book bag, check the stack of unread books to see which ones are due and what we need to recheck, and any library DVDs (which we keep on top of the TV), and go. Now if I could figure out a system that works as well for chapter books that the girls take with them when they leave the house.

Nice shelf! We have had a dedicated library shelf for several years now. It was the only way that library books did not end up lost or late! When we return from a trip to the library we unload our books into the shelf. The boys can take books any time they choose but they must be returned to the shelf when they are finished with them. This has saved us time knowing where books are and we rarely have a missing book!

It is always great to find a system that works! Our books are in baskets on the floor. It works- misc. library books in one basket and current study books in the other. However, I would love to find a shelf (or something) that would get the baskets off the ground.

We use "baskets". They're really those boxes with handles that you buy on the clearance rack at Target - cost $14 then $3!

We keep all the library books in that - and yes, we need an answer for the chapter books that run around the house on their own legs. :)

Lori we used to have the basket and Shauna we did book totes too!

Too many books and it was a mess!

This is a great idea!

We have a huge basket for the library books when we bring them in. Then I have a top shelf reserved for the library books that we are using in the schoolroom/kitchen.

WOW. And I thought we borrowed a lot of library books! I like the idea of having one place for all libray books. Since I have a majority of non-readers still, I keep my books in baskets so that the cover can entice them to pick up one to "read". Forward facing is the new rage in our library (finally to take Jim Trelease's recommendation....15 years? later)

Love Jim Trelease Marcia! We have gutters in their rooms to forward face and I used to have that book basket which forward faced them, but now that my kids are older this thing is fantastic.

I also guarantee we have more books than are on this shelf!
