Fractions

The other day I worked on fractions with R8. She had to name the fractions pictured and then order them from greatest to least. She did it correctly but couldn't explain why. So, told her that as the denominator gets bigger the fraction gets smaller...confused look. So, I pulled out the fraction pieces.

Then it was easier to see!

I love those fraction pieces. I know that I could use them myself, I just don't get fractions, which can make for some fun times when trying to cook for my little army. LOL!

My son's saxon math test book came with printables for pie pieces. It suggested to color them to help with seeing the difference.

We colored our wheels then he glued the paper on cardstock before we cut them out. So if you don't have cool plast pieces like these you could do this in other ways. We keep our cardstock paper ones in a ziplock bag now and pull them out when the boys struggle with seeing things like you said :) Seeing math definately helps with grasping some of the more difficult concepts.
